Eight arrested in Imo in connection with arson attacks on NOUN university campus and home of ex-Senator Frank Ibezim (video)

Men of the Imo state police command have arrested eight persons in connection with an arson attack at the National Open University (NOUN), Ezeoke Nsu, in Ehime Mbano, as well as the destruction of part of the residence of Senator Frank Ibezim, an ex-senator who represented Okigwe South, on September 30, 2024 at about 2100hrs.

The attacks occurred days after the former Senator was accused of facilitating the establishment of an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp within the National Open University campus in the Nsu Community for people from Northern Nigeria. Some residents of the area had protested against the rumored move.

Ibezim had in a statement released, denied the claim, saying

“For emphasis, I must restate that there are no plans to settle IDPs, Refugees or Migrant persons at the National Open University Centre, Nsu, Ehime Mbano LGA. Any such claim is categorically false. I will never be part of such a plan. The plan is for skills training for our vulnerable young people from the South East.”

In an update shared this morning October 2, the spokesperson of the Imo state police command, ASP Henry Okoye, said the command has arrested eight persons in connection with the arson and that more investigation will continue.
